Future Now 2020: 100 Contemporary Artists from the Aesthetica Art Prize, Magazine

"I believe that the expansion of urbanisation and industry in the American natural landscape has defined a new kind of space. This can be described as a "non-place." We experience a transition from one site to the next: we have arrived but at the same time we never left. I am a photographer and visual artist based in Seattle, Washington. I graduated from the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris, France with honours. My work has been featured throughout  USA, Europe and Asia (through exhibitions, selections and various awards). My process is deeply influenced by my background working as a plastic artist"

EMPTY PLACES : ABANDONED SPACES

Opening Reception: Saturday Feb 19th 6-8pm
Exhibit Dates: Feb 19th - Mar 5th, 2022. Juror | Elizabeth Flinsch

Through the visual representation of abandoned spaces, artifacts of history are at once fresh and new, ancient and decayed. The past continues to live in these forsaken, ruined, or empty spaces and we ask— Who were the people who lived and worked here? What were their lives like? What were their stories? What happened to them in these spaces?

Praxis Gallery presents photographic art that explores the visual and social significance of abandoned space - where derelict factories, churches, private houses or other empty places serve as the basis for creative investigation.

Publication/exhibition NY By Feature Shoot magazine.

30 photographs from The Print Swap by Feature Shoot are heading to Brooklyn as part of a street exhibition running from the week of November 29th through December 6th. Our jury–which included Feature Shoot’s Alison Zavos; Google’s Anna G. Dickson; Aquin Matthews, Founder of the Indian Photography Festival; and Maarten Schilt of Schilt Publishing–have selected exhibiting photographers from across the globe, including artists based in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Japan, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Bavaria, and Australia.

Publication: THE FACE Magazine, Photographers making isolation sexy

CULTURE:  In the current situation, isolation is an ordeal – but it can also look pretty. Just check out these seven photographers lensing quiet street scenes, empty shopping centres and bars without people for proof.

Words: TJ Sidhu, Self-isolation. All feels a bit George Orwell doesn’t it? Commutes are now roughly 50 seconds long. Bed-kitchen table-sofa-bed. Personal hygiene is long gone. FaceTime is the new good-time-gal and it’s likely you’ve been wearing tracksuit bottoms for eight days straight. If by now you’re starting to feel a bit doolally, take a breather and check out the photographers and curators capturing isolation in many forms on their Instagrams, from the confines of the living room walls, of course. Loneliness never looked so inviting…

EMMANUEL MONZON @emmanuelmonzonphotography

Isolation might often conjure up images of unsettling emptiness, but Seattle-based Emmanuel Monzon’s use of exposure and familiar subjects like a Heinz ketchup bottle sat in a diner, or a giant T‑Rex model placed in between palm trees, are inviting – calming, almost. Placed together, his feed works like a friendly photo diary.

USA: PHOTOPLACE Gallery, Contemporary Landscape. (JUROR'S AWARD), Jurors: Jacob and Alissa Hessler.

"Emmanuel Monzon’s photograph of the trailer at a rest stop was selected as our Juror’s Award.  This artist showed a singular voice in the work submitted and we loved his direct and powerful images that felt almost cinematic and surreal, the human-made structures perfectly placed in the scene. Our Director’s Award goes to Joyce Ernst, who captured the twisted piece of tagged metal – a relic of some failed infrastructure – left behind in an otherwise unspoiled vista."

PUBLICATION: EYESHOT Magazine

EYESHOT / The street photography eyes on the world scene.

Created by Marco Savarese in 2011 with the name “Hyde Park Photography”, EYESHOT is a very ambitious project. Our goal is to offer a magazine that talks about and focuses on street photography in terms of language and as an art form.
Our intention is thus to offer a magazine created by photographers and for photographers, both at an amateur and professional level. We are totally open to the collaboration of readers and we pay special attention to the final product by offering a quality magazine that is unique in the field of photography.

The EYESHOT website presents the magazine well and functions as an active instrument, in terms of presenting the product as well as functioning as an interchange between the editorial staff and our readers/collaborators. This implies contacting the possible photographers who we want to involve in the project of the month. In fact, the magazine will have a main theme on which we will build our planning and selection of photographers. Behind this project is an editorial board focused on selecting the theme and contents offered to readers month by month.

Says Emmanuel: I like to play/’mix’ two approaches: The codes of the new topographics and the concept of “in between-two states” inspired by the anthropologist Marc Auge under the name of non-places. I like transitional places, like intersections or passages from one world to another, such as from a residential area to an industrial area. I also like the tourist places altered by the human trace. We often find this feeling of emptiness, of visual paradox by travelling throughout the United States. The transition from one site to the next: You have arrived and at the same time you have never left. I believe that the expansion of the urban or industrial landscape in the American natural landscape has redefined this space and has become itself a “non-place.”

"Perhaps one theme that does emerge, however, centers around the precarious relationship between nature and humankind. The sea becomes a recurring motif, as does the man-altered landscape, as seen in Stas Bartnikas’s aerial landscape and Emmanual Monzon’s roadside scenery. The fragility of the wild comes to the fore in the works of Tiina Tormanen, who photographs a dead fish, and Aurélien Calonne, who captures Skaftafellsjökull, a melting glacier in Iceland. And still, despite all this frailty, these twenty photographers find beauty in the earth, whether they’re exploring the remotest wilderness or walking the bustling city streets."Press.

PUBLICATION: FEATURE SHOOT MAGAZINE- A Photographic Duet of Flesh & Spirit, Earth & Animal, by Miss Rosen

Consider our propensity for seeing duality everywhere we go, on a quest to reduce the dialectic to a conversation centered in an “either/or” proposition as though half is greater than the whole. One of the primary flaws of binary thought is the way it triggers a hierarchical impulse that is patently false. It is neither “either/or” but “and” — the perception of the holistic nature of the universe.

On the whole, this takes more effort to assert, to swim against tides that define our radically polarized times. Sometimes it’s less an effort and more a response to what already exists. For French photographers Antoine D’agata and Emmanuel Monzon, this dynamic revealed itself in the exhibition of their work by Charbon Space in Fine Art Asia 2018.( More Website...)

George Jenne Come in, stranger

Double-Solo Exhibition - a European premiere curated by Mauro PireddaNovember 4 - December 15, 2017
Opening: November 4 at 6 pm
Privateview Gallery- via Goito 16 - Turin
At Privateview a journey on the road through Emmanuel Monzon and George Jenne’s America. The double-solo inaugurates on 4th November 2017 in Turin, a European premiereTurin, October 9, 2017 - The journey proceeds through the American figurative language of Privateview Gallery, which again proposes two new artists to the European scene. The double-solo exhibition of photographer Emmanuel Monzon and of video-artist George Jenne, split between both floors of the gallery walls, inaugurates on November 4, in Turin for the night of Contemporary Arts. ‘Urban Sprawl’ and 'Come in, strangers’ are two independent exhibits, united by the need to reveal the less popular and stereotypical aspects of American culture, all that is commonly excluded from traditional on the road literature. True America, the suburban America, with all the contradictions and differences that characterize the States; places and imagery that, in a politically correct form, are always excluded from the collective fantasy of the American Dream, pre-packaged for tourists and staged for the glamorous venues.

Portfolio ShowCase 10 Exhibition with juror Hannah Frieser

"Each year brings artists, fresh imagery and a new juror together to produce the Center for Fine Art Photography’s Portfolio ShowCase Award and Publication. These annual Call for Entry provides a platform to feature photographers who demonstrate a remarkable commitment to their work and the strength of vision to produce a cohesive series of photographs.

Emmanuel Monzon “is on a path of his own. We imagine him walking the streets in quiet solitude. He observes, peeks around corners and stops in fascination at the most unusual, even banal places. His sense of discovery is infectious. And so we perceive the magic he creates from little more than gray concrete and blue sky as a new revelation. Every door, car or tree is seen in a new way within his mastery of composition and framing. The mystery of a doorway radiating with warm light from within suddenly becomes irresistible. A randomly parked car seems to anchor the world. As we follow along with him past block after block, we can only beg to please keep walking.”

FESTIVAL: PHOTOVILLE, BROOKLYN, NY 2017

PHOTOVILLE is New York City’s FREE premier photo destination. Produced by United Photo Industries, the annual festival is a modular venue built from re-purposed shipping containers. By creating a physical platform for photographers of all stripes to come together and interact, Photoville provides a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse audience — a veritable cross-section of the world’s photographic community.

Photoville returns for a sixth year, in picturesque Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, from September 13-24, 2017. Once again, Brooklyn Bridge Plaza—located in Brooklyn Bridge Park in DUMBO beneath the majestic span of the Brooklyn Bridge— will be transformed into an immersive photography village populated by 55+ shipping containers repurposed into galleries.

Working with more than 90 curatorial partners, Photoville exhibits work by over 500 visual artists each year. In addition, the festival offers nighttime projection programs, hands-on workshops, an education day for New York City middle and high-school students (proudly supported by the New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment), panel discussions and talks presented next door at St. Ann’s Warehouse, tents with vendors, family-friendly photo activities, publishers and gear demonstrations, a community photo book store run by Red Hook Editions, tintype portraits by the Penumbra Foundation, and a beer garden with a range of food vendors by Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Brewery beers. Photoville is open to the public—all ages, dogs included—free of charge, making it unlike any other photo festival in the world.

Immersion and interactivity are at the heart of what makes Photoville such a successful and popular event, allowing it to become the largest annual photographic event in New York City and among the most-attended photographic events nationwide. THE PRINT SWAP

UNITED PHOTO INDUSTRIES

FEATURE SHOOT MAGAZINE:

"Last year, Feature Shoot launched The Print Swap, a way to connect photographers around the world. The rules are simple: anyone can submit by using the hashtag #theprintswap on Instagram. If your image is selected, it’s printed by the experts at Skink Ink in Brooklyn before being mailed across the world and landing on the doorstep of another winner. Every winning photographer gives a print, and every winning photographer receives a print too. Pieces are mailed out randomly, so it’s always a fun surprise to see who ends up with which print.

Since its inception, The Print Swap has received more than 45,000 submissions. Curators Alison Zavos and Julia Sabot have selected more than 2,500 winning images. Over the past two months, they’ve also considered all incoming submissions and handpicked 65 of them to show at the first ever Print Swap exhibition, opening in September at Photoville at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Photoville, the largest annual photography event in New York City and, will include 70+ exhibitions this year, all installed in repurposed shipping containers-turned-galleries."

Issue 02 of Paradise is now available for pre-order. Inside, we have an interview with Leah Frances (@americansquares) where she shares the inspiration behind her ongoing American interiors series, poetry from Walter Bakowski, street photography from Castro Frank that captures hardship and hope, and much more. 18 New Topographics Photos That Could Have Been Made in the 1970s

.."The Print Swap includes work across all genres, and we sorted through the archive to put together this online group show, inspired by the historic 1975 exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape at George Eastman House in Rochester, New York.

The famous exhibition included work by Stephen Shore, Robert Adams, Frank Gohlke, Lewis Baltz, Nicolas Nixon, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, John Schott, and Henry Wessel, Jr. At the time, some people “got” it. Many did not. “What I remember most clearly was that nobody liked it,” Gohlke told the LA Times thirty-five years later, “I think it wouldn’t be too strong to say that it was a vigorously hated show.”

These photographers had chosen subjects that were not by any means extraordinary. They photographed motels, American suburban sprawl, industrial sites– places few people found beautiful or interesting. They actively defied the conventions of romantic, sublime landscape photography. “Some people found it unutterably boring,” Gohlke explained, “Some people couldn’t believe we were serious, taking pictures of this stuff.”...

INTERVIEW: A.L.U. MAGAZINE

It was about this certain tranquillity and the clear compositions, which caught my eye. While looking at the photographs it seemed that I could stand like this forever. Being astonished by the methodical perfection of the texture, form and colour the artwork of Emmanuel Monzons somehow embodies both: human loneliness and the urban American culture. Trained as a painter at les Beaux-Arts in Paris, Monzon verifies that there is no judgement in his artwork. Still there are some subtle feelings emerging from his mindful arrangements of forms and colours. Luckily Emmanuel had some minutes for us, so we could ask himself....more website

French visual artist Emmanuel Monzon explores urban sprawl in his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

Called “Enter the Void”, the show, at Charbon art space from February 25 until March 25, focuses on the US city of Seattle where Monzon is based. The images, both bleak and beautiful, depict a perfect balance of photographic composition paired with muted tones.“This aesthetic of the emptiness in my photographic work attempts to understand our current environment – can it be one of de-civilisation,” asks Monzon, a graduate of the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Monzon focuses primarily on the idea of urban sprawling and urban expansion.

The Top 10 Photography Galleries In LA

Daren DeFrankUpdated: 19 May 2016

Photography as an art form is a relatively new medium. Though there is some evidence of earlier attempts, photography didn’t really come into focus until the 1800s by creating durable images with light and film. Photography has the unique ability to suspend a moment instantly. Subsequently it can then transform viewers back to the time and place the photo was shot. It also allows the viewer to experience what the artist was seeing through his or her eyes. The lens grants artists the power to create their own vision in hard copy. With the ability to capture the entire world, there’s a lot of photography to see. Here are the ten best photo galleries in Los Angeles.

The Top 10 Photography Galleries In LA Los Angeles Center for Digital Art

The Los Angeles Center for Digital Art is located in the area known as gallery row. The center focuses on digital art in the contemporary area. Dedicated to spreading photography, new media, video, and interactive media, the center encapsulates the forward-thinking blend of using science to create art. This hybrid is the basis of photography itself. The center has an ongoing array of exhibits in the gallery and is known to include international works. However the space is also dedicated to supporting the local community art scene by giving exposure to Los Angeles area artists. Outside of the LACDA space, they are involved with curating digital exhibits at institutions and festivals.

PUBLICATION:  POOL RESOURCES MAGAZINE.

Pool Resources is a web-based publication that seeks to create a transitive dialogue within the art community. It began as an idea back in 2012, when the creators still lived in the same state. When they moved away from one another, they used this project, and continue to, for conversations about art in today's context.

With an emphasis on photography and writing, a literal and figurative change is communicated. Each artist has a distinctive way of conveying time through his or her environments, whether it is with a picture or text. With the belief of the notion of impermanence, Pool Resources strives to showcase vernacular works in a manner that is probing and edifying.
